How to get rid of stains?
Whether on the face, hands, or décolleté, spots can appear on any area overexposed to the sun. What can you do to prevent them? What can you do to treat them? Our experts answer all your questions!
My mother has spots...will I get them too?
Let's say you have a more stain-prone environment. But it all depends on your lifestyle! If you expose yourself without protection, you multiply the risks!
Please note: there is not one stain but MANY stains!
Pigmentation spots are numerous and of diverse origin: heredity, hormonal changes, medication, excessive exposure to the sun, etc. Among the most common are freckles, age spots, chloasma, café-au-lait spots and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
While some of them may be hereditary, spots that appear after repeated sun exposure, or following skin damage caused by sunburn, can be avoided or limited!
Rule number 1: protect yourself!
To prevent melanocytes from being overstimulated, it is therefore necessary to limit the oxidative stress generated by free radicals due to ultraviolet rays.
Free radicals mean antioxidants, which are molecules that have the characteristic of coupling with free radicals in order to neutralize them. Thus, free radicals no longer stimulate melanocytes, which then no longer uncontrollably produce melanin, the brown pigment that causes dark spots.
….. Thanks to food
You need to get an optimal dose of antioxidants daily with fruits and vegetables at every meal. If your plate is filled with colors, at least three different ones, you're sure to meet all your antioxidant needs.
Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. When it comes to essential fatty acid intake, focus on omega-3s . The idea? Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables, ensure two servings of good-quality protein, and three tablespoons of a variety of oils per day.
The foods to favor are those that are rich in antioxidant molecules such as:
- Vitamin C : citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberry, watercress, tomato, pepper.
- Carotenoids : tomato, carrot, pumpkin, squash, sweet potato, mango, apricot, melon, yellow peach, watermelon, spinach, watercress, kale.
- Polyphenols : red grapes, tomatoes, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries.
- Vitamin A : liver, egg yolk, oily fish, butter, cheese.
- Vitamin E : vegetable oil (sunflower, walnut, hazelnut, olive, rapeseed, etc.), almond, hazelnut, fresh vegetables.
- Zinc : wheat germ, oysters, calf's liver, wholemeal bread, seafood, egg yolk, pumpkin seeds, nuts.
- Selenium : seafood, fish, mushrooms, garlic, onion, whole grains.
Since actinic brown spots are most often a sign of tissue oxidation, it is important to avoid anything that promotes this oxidation: UV rays, tobacco, alcohol, pollution, overcooked food, vitamin deficiencies, etc.
…. Thanks to protective care
Using sunscreen every day between March and October is the best way to avoid brown spots. When we talk about sun, we don't just mean sunbathing, but also all outdoor activities (gardening, cycling, or simply walking). Even if you don't bask in the sun, you can develop spots. Besides, even with a cloud cover, UV rays are still there, so be careful! Indeed, when there isn't much sun, people don't think about protecting themselves. However, UV rays penetrate this layer of cloud and are harmful.
Rule number 2: prevent and treat stains!
Before considering laser treatments with a cosmetic doctor, you need to adopt good beauty habits!
- Protect yourself from the sun with 50+ UVA/UVB sunscreen. Even in the city, even on cloudy or overcast days. Ideally, from March to October. Be careful with your hands; we often forget to protect them!
- Exfoliate your skin regularly. Ideally, once a week. This promotes cell renewal.
- Apply targeted active ingredients locally to existing spots.
- Treat the rest of the face with suitable treatments.
Rule number 3: choose the right care!
