First signs of aging: should I adapt my beauty routine?

How do we recognize the first signs of aging?

The first signs of skin aging can appear as early as the mid-twenties. From the age of 30, 40, or 50, we talk about behavioral aging of the skin, and the environment, lifestyle, and our skincare routine can have a real impact on the appearance of wrinkles, skin firmness, and its overall appearance.

  • 30 years old : Wrinkles begin to become more frequent. These are usually the famous frown lines, or wrinkles on the forehead.
  • 40 years old : wrinkles become deeper and appear in new areas such as nasolabial folds or crow's feet wrinkles at the corners of the eyes.
  • 50 years and older : the skin is mature, after the age of fifty in general, wrinkles are well established. These are called deep wrinkles.

Skin aging is not the same for everyone, several factors influence its appearance more or less early: too much sun, stress, pollution, not enough sleep, too much makeup, not removing makeup, excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, not using suitable creams or serums, etc.

What are the factors that aggravate the first signs of aging?

When overexposed to pollution and/or cigarette smoke, skin will appear dull, thicker, more marked, and with pigmentation spots. Poorly maintained skin will be easily noticeable by its texture: enlarged pores, poor balance between oily and dry areas. Small daily actions can also accentuate the first signs of aging, such as poor diet, alcohol consumption, and poorly adapted or overly aggressive cosmetic routines. Sugar, in particular, is the confirmed enemy of youthful skin. Excess sugar attaches to skin proteins, reducing their ability to function.

When these elements, essential for the creation of skin, are damaged, the skin becomes drier and less supple, which leads to more wrinkles and dullness. Finally, so-called "overworked" skin is often recognized by expressiveness, drawn, wrinkled features, a sad face, and dark circles. The main causes are stress, lack of sleep, anxiety, etc.

What are the right reflexes to have?

To preserve your youth, in addition to a good diet, regular physical activity and quality sleep, many cosmetic products exist to maintain the beauty of the skin and prevent the appearance of the first signs of aging. Serums , creams , to be applied morning and evening every day without exception after careful makeup removal/cleansing. Crow's feet and smile lines would no longer be signs of aging but symbols of a cheerful life. Times are changing and so are mentalities. On the other hand, the lion's wrinkle, the corners of the lips, the spots giving a dull complexion, would be the new areas to target for treatments.

The ideal routine: In the morning, always start by cleansing your skin with a treatment water or toner. Then apply a day cream over a custom-made hydrating or multidimensional serum like IOMA's Mon Sérum , while gently massaging. Place a small amount of product on your hands, then, using your palms, smooth the skin from your chin to your temples. On your forehead, apply the cream with small pinching movements along the wrinkle. Daily, use an eye cream by smoothing the eyelid with your fingertips from the inside out. Massage under the eye using the same ritual, not too close to the eye. In the evening, use a makeup remover suited to your skin and always finish cleansing with a hydrating toner. Apply your serum before your night cream.
